Windows Vista

I finally got my copy of Windows Vista from HP back in March. Two DVD-ROMs came in the mail. The first DVD contained Windows Vista from Microsoft. The second DVD contained the Hewlett-Packard drivers and other stuff. (My computer is actually a Compaq brand that is manufactured by HP.) I spent the better part of a day installing MS Windows Vista. The installation of Vista from the Microsoft CD took about 2 hours. The HP part took another hour or so to install.

Reading through the HP FAQs on Vista, I found that there was a long list of 3rd party programs that had one issue or another when running under Vista. HP's solution to a few of these problems was to completely uninstall the software that didn't run, and hope that the manufacture would come up with a timely update.

Then for about a two week period, I struggled to get everything working right as I was frequently experiencing a problem with one application or another. To make a long story short, I finally gave up. I re-formatted the hard disk and restored Windows XP on my machine. I'm going to wait a few months and do a clean install (instead of upgrading XP). In the meanwhile, I will hope that they come up with Vista-compatible versions of the software I use.

Was installing MS Windows Vista frustrating? Well, I didn't know what I really expected, but the benefits are few. Microsoft has touted its Aero interface. It does look cool, but I am not sure what practical advantages it has over the XP interface. And, I'm not so sure that I like the Windows Vista search feature. I especially don't like the fact that it automatically searches through old Emails.

Anyway, I also wanted to give another shameless plug for my favorite personal finance blog PFStock.

MoMa Chip Plot Art

Over 15 years ago, I visited the Museum of Modern Art (the MoMA) in New York City. At that time, I saw what is known as a silicon chip layout on display. The plot is over 40 inches on each side. Having worked in the semiconductor industry for many years, I have acquired quite a few similar looking plots. This particular plot shows a memory chip from Intel Corporation.

Original plots are printed by something known as an Electrostatic Plotter. The enormous plotter was manufactured by the now defunct company Versatec. Most companies that design computer chips have since replaced their "electrostatic plotters" with an equivalent ink jet plotter from Hewlett Packard.

These plots generally consist of repetitions of geometric shapes. But, is it art? What do you think? Would you consider framing a computer chip plot and displaying in your living room?

Here is a link to the original page on the MoMA website.

Any Comments?

If a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is there to hear it, does it make any sound? If a blog is posted to the Internet, and nobody reads it, does it make any difference? It seems that somebody may have stumbled upon my blog, but I don't know who. If you happen across my blog, would you kindly leave me a comment to let me know you came by?

I've noticed that I haven't yet received any comments on my blog. I know that there are at least some visitors since I opened it up. So, at this time, I have enabled the ability to make anonymous comments on my blog. Of course, if I start to get spam because of this, I may turn it back off. For now, anonymous comments are allowed.

A while ago, I had mentioned that I bought a new computer in order to secure a copy of Microsoft Windows Vista. The computer, which I bought back in November 2006, is a Compaq Presario SR2050NX and included the Windows XP MCE 2005 operating system. As part of the deal, I am supposed to receive Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium from Hewlett-Packard (the parent company of Compaq) after Vista's release. Well, Windows Vista was released back in January. So, where is my free upgrade?
